Anyways. per the manu. of the lowering links (KLR650.com) – off roading is not majorily affected, a little yes, but not a ton, with only lowering the entire bike’s ground clearance by 1.5 inches.
How many miles can you get out of a KLR 650?
Ridden in a sane fashion, the KLR should last for 50k at least, before needing rebore or valve work (other than adjustments.) As with all things, YMMV. I did the mod listed in this link, and my oil consumption went down by about 80%.

How do I lower my KLR650?
If you don’t want to spend a bunch of money, buy a lowering link for 2″ drop. If you are mechanical, you can make the links of steel flat stock to lower your bike and make them lower it maybe 3 inches. Of course you should raise the forks to lower the front end and apparently they’ll only drop about 1¼”.

The KLR stock is going to preform worse on the highway than a vstrom. You can look at it and tell that. BUT, with a few changes you can make it real close to the comfort level of a vstrom.
